dimensionally stable drawingOne of the major hurdles facing Polygon Sales and Application Engineers is differentiating the thermoset self-lubricated PolyLube composite material from inferior thermoplastic or hybrid materials tested in the past. The failures of these materials can become accepted as legends within a company. Don't let superstition rule out this capable replacement!

PolyLube composite bearings are made from high strength fiberglass, with an individual filament tensile strength near 500,000 psi compared to 100,000 psi for high strength steel. The thermoset resin is used to complete the structural part of the bearing. Polygon’s wear resistant liner provides the lubrication, PTFE, and a high load carrying capability with low wear rates. The result is a material that will behave similarly to steel with regards to thermal expansion and will not swell in the presence of water or hydrocarbon based fluids.

Maintain fit across broad temperature ranges

Arizona in the summer or Alaska in the winter, composite bearings will not pinch the pin or lose the interference fit with the bore. The coefficient of thermal expansion for the PolyLube bearing is approximately 4.8x10-6°F-1 compared to steel at about 7.3x10-6°F-1. This works out to a difference in the two materials, based on a 2” starting dimension, of 0.0005 inches if the change in ambient temperature is 100°F. There are not many cases in which outdoor equipment is being used in -30°F or 170°F environmental temperatures however, if your equipment does happen to be used in these situations, you can rest assured that the PolyLube bearing will continue operating with the same performance as if it was a mild spring afternoon.
